National Careers Week – Zak Whitlock

This week Kingston Landscape Group‘s HR team has been focusing on National Careers Week and have been collaborating closely with Merris Wood College to offer work experience and apprenticeship opportunities to its students. We felt that this also served as a fantastic opportunity to recognise some of our key staff members, who began their career as an apprentice with us. Today, we shine a spotlight on Zak Whitlock, our Plant Buyer. Zak started at KLG as an apprentice landscaper in 2012, a fresh-faced 16-year-old school leaver unsure of his career path, he opted for an apprenticeship, wanting to learn a trade and earn money. After completing the 2 year apprenticeship, Zak transitioned to a full-time laborer, then progressed to a site supervisor. After five years in site roles, he seized an opportunity to train as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor in the office. Fast forward to 2024, Zak is now a valuable member of our buying team, collaborating closely with Contracts Managers, nurseries, and suppliers to ensure plant and tree quality for all our projects and nursery sites. Reflecting on his nearly 12-year journey with KLG, Zak expresses, “KLG has not only given me a job but a career. I’ve had the chance to upskill and progress. I’ve always valued the opportunity to explore new roles and learn from my mistakes over the years. The team may have evolved, but there has always been a warm, friendly, family-like atmosphere both in the office and on-site.”

Kingston Landscape Group is pleased to provide our employees with the chance to enhance their skills and advance their careers. If you’d like more information about opportunities with us please contact abbey@klguk.com
