Kingston Landscape Group takes all of our employee’s health, safety and wellbeing very seriously and to ensure we keep our people safe, we have recently welcomed Matthew Smith to the team as HSEQ Manager.
Matthew has been enjoying the Australian climate for the last 8 years, living and working in sunny Queensland with his young family. He tells us he is happy to be back though, not so much for the weather but more so he can go & see his beloved Crystal Palace play at Selhurst Park. Matthew’s previous roles as HSEQ Manager have seen him work in some extremely high-risk industries including bridge building and an alumna refinery. We caught up with Matthew to discuss his role of HSEQ Manager with KLG.
Tell us about HSEQ & your role as HSEQ Manager for KLG?
HSEQ stands for Health Safety, Environment and Quality – as HSEQ Manager my role is to manage and maintain the Integrated Management System for KLG. From and Health & Safety perspective my objective is to ensure our people are safe whilst maintaining the environment. Putting Quality procedures in place guarantees a best in class standard. Another, integral part of my role is to make certain we continually maintain our quality accreditations ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
What would you say is the most challenging part of your role?
Keeping all parties happy! I need to be the connection between everyone from senior level management to the guys on the ground. It can be challenging sometimes to ensure a sustainable solution is found that meets all requirements.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
Actually, it’s quite similar to what I find most challenging – I really enjoy dealing with people. Coming up with creative solutions, problem solving and seeing the positive outcomes. As HSEQ Manager I feel like what I’m doing makes a difference, improving businesses and protecting people.

I’m really looking forward to working with the KLG team, being on-site checking out jobs and looking at the company as a whole to ensure all our people and clients are safe at all times.
