Prior to the recent multi-million-pound redevelopment, Hammersmith Town Hall’s immediate predecessor and original site was a vestry hall built in 1896 at the corner of Hammersmith Broadway and Shepherd’s Bush Road. The site is now a multi-use civic, cultural, and residential quarter known as the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham Civic Campus.
The masterplan integrates the restored Grade II-listed Art Deco Town Hall with new public realm and residential development, including 204 modern apartments. Works began in 2024 and are still ongoing as part of a complex, multi-phase programme involving a wide range of trades.
A key element of the landscape strategy involved early tree specification, with all specimens tagged at a nursery in Germany and personally selected by the Contract Manager and Lead Architect. Due to the extended programme, many trees were planted later at a much larger size than originally selected, creating additional installation challenges on site.
In total, over 130 trees have been planted, some over 8 metres tall with a 60–70cm girth, alongside more than 14,000 plants across a diverse mix of species, helping to establish a rich and layered landscape for the Civic Campus.
